House of Marley Chant Sport Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

chant sport portable bluetooth speaker review australia

House of Marley speakers don’t only focus on high quality sound like others do, but their products make a friendly impact to the environment as it uses eco-friendly materials in the manufacturing, such as recycled plastics and metals. It can also float, and it’s waterproof. So what other great features that this floating speaker offer? Have a look below!

Design

The Chant Sport has a cylindrical design and is stable on a flat surface. The build is constructed from bio-plastic and silicone and feels like hard plastic with blended materials, so it makes a minimal impact on the earth as it uses eco-friendly materials. The House of Marley Chant Sport Bluetooth Waterproof Speaker has a small pattern you can feel for pressing the buttons.

The power includes a small buttons for power, Bluetooth pairing, and volume up/down. There’s also a tiny hole for microphone support. On the back, a fabric loop hangs from the top, for using a carabiner clip (included in packaging) to attach the speaker to a travel bag. The bottom is a rubber tab that can seal up the micro USB port (for charging) and an aux port for the optional wired audio input.

Features

This is a waterproof speaker with an IP67 water resistance rating (up to one meter for 30 minutes). It’s designed with buoyancy so you won’t lose it when you take a dive, it will go straight up and float. It uses Bluetooth 4.0, and a built-in microphone can be used as a speakerphone.

The internal battery has a 1,800mAh capacity which gives it 8 hours of playback (+/- based on the volume level). MoH includes a micro USB to USB cable, excluding AC adapter. Turning it on is easy. Hold the power button on for a couple seconds, and it will be in discover-mode then find and on your mobile device and pair. If you want to connect a different audio source, hold down on the Bluetooth button and repeat. There are LED light that signifies the speaker’s status.

Sound

Although the speaker is a cylinder design, the sound is aimed at opposite directions of the cylinder. HoM claims that there are passive radiators that help obtain deeper bass reproduction and it turns out punchy, yet smooth.

I like the prominent mid-range such as the vocals and guitar strums. Treble is a close second, the quality of the treble is great although it’s not as forward as the mids are. In terms of audio, it’s delivered by two 4.5W, 1.75″ drivers.

Carabiner Clip

You can use the carabiner clip to hang the speaker off of various hooks, so whether you’re inside tent, in the tower, in the wild or just walking around with a speaker attached to your belt or bag. I think the speaker is pretty robust, waterproof and won’t get damaged easily.

Advantages Disadvantages
  • Float on water
  • Fits in a cup holder
  • Hang the speaker with the caribiner clip
  • Clarity of sound
  • Control pad is hard to see
  • The symbols have the same colour as the body of the speaker

Conclusions

In my opinion, this speaker is not really special as the speaker lacks a standout feature, and doesn’t truly excel at one particular thing. However, It’s a solid, compact speaker and I appreciate the blended bio-plastic and recyclable aluminium housings, and I’m happy with the eight hours of play with floating capability. This speaker makes it a great pool toy while listening to music!
