sphero ollie robot review

How many of us had remote control vehicles when we were young? Now you can experience it again with Sphero Darkside Ollie Robot. This A$199.95 remote control vehicle is the evil counterpart to the existing A$159.95 Ollie robot that's been on store shelves for some time, but darker and faster. So, let's have a look at the new Darkest Ollie Robot below!

sphero ollie robot darkside review

Command Darkside from your smartphone or tablet at speeds of up to 14mph. It's faster than you can run! Darkside comes with two sets of removable tires and hubcaps to change the style which I think is really cool. You have the control of the speed, handling, acceleration and make Darkside your favourite colour by customizing the glowing LED color –or pick a flashing LED color pattern.

With the Darkside’s durable shell, you don’t have to worry about crashing because the built-in LED’s with customizable settings lets you drive at night and incase you're out of control, the Drift Mode has been rebuilt and refined to give you even more power when you’re out of control. You can also put Darkside’s tires on for extra traction and off-road driving or take them off for drifting on smooth surfaces.

How to start

To get started, you’ll need to download the Ollie app available in the App Store and the Android Marketplace for free then touch your Bluetooth Smart enabled device to your Darkside. Follow the on-screen tutorials, and learn the basics of how to aim and drive your Darkside.

The best thing about the Darkside is that it can do a lot of tricks. There are cool tricks you can do with the Ollie Darkside by looking at the Ollie manual or Skiros website. You can see all sorts of videos that show how to do some pretty cool tricks such as full spin or go up on its side.  Command Darkside with the joystick while you use the trick swipe, tap, or hold the gesture pad to make Darkside perform different tricks.

Pros: Cons:
  • Quick recharge.
  • Easy to set up and control.
  • Fast and maneuverable.
  • Easy to pair with iPhone and works seamlessly.
  • Built-in How-To videos make it easy for new users to get the hang of playing with Ollie.
  • Poor battery life.
  • can get boring if you don’t go to the customization route.
  • Darkside Edition is $30 more than standard Ollie.
  • When you start going crazy with tricks, the device will unintentionally do the complete opposite from what you tell it to.
  • The controls can be weak at times when the device isn't directly in front of you.
  • There is no power button to turn Darkside Ollie on or off, instead it is simply powered on by tapping your device to Ollie.

Overall, I’m impressed with the improvements of Sphero Darkside Ollie Robot from the other Orbotix products because Sphero Darkside Ollie Robot can tackle the toughest terrain with total confidence. If you leave this robot idle for too long, it may get a mind of its own which I think is pretty creepy. However, the next generation of the remote control toy has certainly landed. You can get your own remote control from Darkside Ollie for A$199.95.
